The Impact of High School Sports on College Admissions

Playing high school UFABET เข้าสู่ระบบ เพื่อทำการเดิมพันทันที sports can be a great way for students to demonstrate non-academic qualities colleges look for, such as leadership and teamwork. It can also help them build relationships with coaches and teammates who can serve as mentors during the college application process. These relationships can be particularly helpful for students from underserved communities who may not have access to mentors otherwise.

In previous studies, researchers have often found that high school athletes are more likely to attend college than their peers. This “athlete advantage” has been attributed to both preexisting characteristics of the student, and to the positive academic, social, and psychosocial effects of participation (Fredricks & Eccles, 2006; Spady, 1970).

While it is possible that these benefits have shifted over the years, the results of our recent study suggest that the link between high school sports and college enrollment remains. Using propensity score modeling techniques, we found that sports participation was still associated with higher college attendance rates, even when controlling for the student’s own socioeconomic background and educational expectations. This finding was true for both male and female students, and across all three decades of the study.

It is important to note that this impact only holds for students who are recruited by a coach. While the impact of a top recruit on admissions is substantial, a high school athlete who is not being actively pursued by a coach will have much less of an effect.
