Attic Temperature Regulation Techniques

Attic Temperature Regulation Techniques

As fiberglass insulation  air rises, it naturally finds its way into your attic spaces and then out through attic fans, vents, and other ventilation techniques. This natural flow helps to regulate your attic’s temperature and prevents heat from leaking into living areas in the winter. But, if your attic is not properly ventilated, it can quickly become overheated and lead to a host of issues ranging from shingles damage to costly energy bills.

Keeping your attic properly insulated, ventilated and regulated is an effective way to combat the sun’s harmful heat transfer processes. It is also an excellent way to reduce energy costs and increase your home’s energy efficiency.

In homes that are air conditioned, attic fans (also known as roof vents) can be a great choice to help control attic temperatures. These powerful fans push hot air out of the attic and pull cooler air in through soffit and ridge vents, ensuring proper ventilation. In addition, gable vents are an efficient solution for ventilation in un-air conditioned homes or those with architectural constraints that make it difficult to install attic fans.

Insulation is a key component to any attic improvement project and can significantly lower your energy bills. Traditional insulation like fiberglass slows conductive and convective heat transfer, but radiant barriers and foil insulation products work to reduce radiant heat flow as well. Additionally, by preventing the sun from heating your attic space in the summer, radiant barrier reduces the amount of time that your HVAC system needs to run, saving you money.
